Hiker Boots for Wildland Firefighting

Looking for an innovative alternative to those traditional logger style wildland fire boots? The HAIX® Missoula is the boot you’ve been looking for.

The Missoula was built especially for the wildland firefighter and hiker. The lighter weight alleviates leg fatigue while on those long hikes, since the less weight you have on your feet, the less energy you have to expend while walking. HAIX® Missoula uses thicker, breathable European leather and minimal seaming to increase stability and also durability of its boots.

Two Zone Lacing

The two zone lacing not only gives you the ability to adjust the boot for a fit tailored just for you, but allows you to achieve the ankle support you need when hiking through rough terrain. It enables you to tighten the boot to the foot and leg area separately so that you get a customized and supportive fit.

Vibram® Rubber Soles and Nomex Protected

The uniquely designed Vibram® rubber sole offers a stable non-slip sole edge so you can keep your footing even when on slick terrain. The Missoula cement sole construction is heat rated to 573°F so you won’t experience sole melt or delamination when conditions start to heat up. Stitching and lacing are all made of heat and flame resistant Nomex® which protects more than three million firefighters worldwide.

Secura Liner® Protected and Superior Heel Grip

The inner liner and upper leather are firmly secured and lasted beneath the sole. with Secura Liner® your inner liner will never pull out or wrinkle over time.

It also has specially designed heels that allow for superior grip even when walking on steep or uneven terrain. The midsole also prevents instability during hiking.

Cushioned and Quick Change Insoles

The comfort cushion insoles protect your feet from pain and provide long-lasting comfort allowing you to serve on duty even for long periods. And with its excellent moisture absorption and quick drying capabilities, you’ll never feel uncomfortable moisture in your boots.

HAIX® Climate System

The Missoula’s built in Climate System let's your feet maintain balance in temperature by keeping your feet warm in cool temperatures and keeping them cool in warm temperatures. The “bellows” effect in this system keeps air circulating with every step a firefighter makes. It helps keep your feet dry from sweat for longer periods making them one of the most comfortable boots you will wear while in line of duty.

Dual Purpose Boots

The HAIX® Missoula is not suitable for HAZMAT but it is a dual purpose boot that can be worn for wildland firefighting or for hiking. Whichever of the two may it be, the Missoula is guaranteed to provide you the support, comfort, and durability needed to fulfill such events or activities.

  • Engineered in Germany
  • Make the change from tradition, and choose HAIX® Missoula.
  • Secura Liner® – will never wrinkle up or pull out over time
  • HAIX® Climate System for temperature balance
  • HAIX® 2-Zone Lacing - Ankle lace lock allows independent lace adjustment between the upper and lower boot
  • Sturdy Vibram® anti-slip heat resistant rubber sole
  • Water resistant, breathable leather

Haix Missoula

The boots are well made and came highly recommended by wildland firefighters. They're not just tough but also comfortable.

My Everyday Boot

I just purchased my third pair of Missoulas. The first pair, purchased four years ago, are now relegated for weekend farm use, but are still fully functioning. They have seen extensive wild land firefighting use in the Pacific Northwest and are very comfortable to wear. My second pair were purchased two years ago and have another good year of use ahead of them before retiring them. The pair I just purchased were done so to take advantage of Black Friday savings ..... I should be good now for footwear for another 4-5 years. The comfort and durability of these boots is incredible, so much that they are not only my favorite work boots but are also my daily footwear ..... I doubt there’s a day in the past four years that I haven’t worn my Missoulas. The breakin period is very quick. The only quirk is that for the first week or so, every step sounds like you’re riding in a saddle until the boots meld to your foot. I’m seeing more and more folks wearing these boots on the firelines (everyone says the same thing ...... I wish I had purchased these earlier). Great product and service!

on my second pair

Great boots. Wear well. I would recommend a true quality insole to go with this boot. And, believe their sizing recommendation. I wear a 10.5 in Merrells, I wear a 10 Haix Missoula.

27 Aug 2020

A very short breakin period, with a better insole they'd be perfect

I wanted to wait until I had my first fire assignment before leaving a review. Upon first putting them on they were a little large for my foot. But I had tried them on with thin socks so that was expected. And then when I hiked around with them for a little bit the tongue was very tight. To the point that I practically had a bruise from them on top of my foot. But the next day I was able to practically squat down to the ground. The insole could use a little cushion, but since that is a very personal thing it makes sense to have it the way that it does.

I would highly recommend, and the boot measuring guide on the site is very accurate.

Very Comfy!

Missoula 2.1

I have been in these for only a week now, they seem to be a good rugged WORK Boot. Not a fancy
Italian Made hiking boot.I have been running Whites and Nicks for 20 + years now and because of
my older bone's have been looking for something more comfortable, which these are.
I landed on the HAIX Website by accident and chose this model because it is offered in a narrow width.
And I run a Fabrication Shop with all kinds of hot stuff flying around.
I can generally tell in a day or so if the boot wants to make my foot conform or my foot is going
to make the boot conform. It seems to be the latter.
With the correct insole for my one fallen arch,I will hope for the best
Thank you

Haix

Great customer service! Easy to break in boots that last through many fire seasons.

GREAT BOOTS

These are my second pair and they fit great. Short break-in period and they are good to go. Had my first pair for 4 years and still wearing them.

Wildfire

On my second pair. Great boot, short break-in time. Very light and comfortable. First pair held up for over two years of daily use, as a full time wildland firefighter.

30 Nov 2019

Once it was great

I had these boots for a few fire seasons and I have to say they were by far the best boots I ever wore. A second bonus was in the winter my crampons fitted on the sole. Did I mention comfortable, so comfortable.... So why an 8...? Firstly state agency (CA) policy changed requiring a 8 inch upper. These are a inch shy of that. And then came the 2.0... (I'm not even going to go there...) All you needed to do was increase the upper to 8 inches, nothing else... I would have been buying these for the rest of my career, not to mention recreational cross use for hiking, snowshoeing, spring mountaineering. If only.... good luck with future boot designs...

If you are a woman ordering these

These are nice boots and i think they would be ideal for fire activites aside from mop up. I am a petite woman and i orderd the men’s equivalent of my running shoe size which was too big. I suggest ordering the men’s equivalent of street shoes instead. I also have small ankles and was not able to crank the ankle area down tight enough so my leg was wobbling around in there. The ankles are very stiff and this hurt my calf at the top. If you have bigger calves or ankles this would not be a problem. When Haix starts to make a true women’s version i will try them again!

Admin 10 Jun 2019

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to review the HAIX Missoula. We are happy to hear that you like the boots and think they would work well on the fire scene. As far as sizing, these are in men's sizes and they run a half size large , so we generally tell women to go down a size and a half to two sizes to accommodate. We apologize you had some issues getting the correct size but we are always available to give sizing help either via live chat or by calling/emailing our Customer Service Dept. We also offer free returns for sizing issues within 30 days as long as they have only been worn to try on inside. We hope you will keep this in mind when considering HAIX again in the future. Stay safe out there!

Great boot but bad sole

Love the comfort of these boots for wild land firefighting. They are a bit stiff for a week or so, then they break in kinda easily. The only drawback on these are the lack of a good sole. These may be called “vibram” soles, but they are NOT the good deep lug type that you might be used to. I have had knee surgery in he past, and theses sole are VERY slippery when in many wet conditions. I hike steep terrain for a living, but when there is water or Mud involved these soles are horrible. It would be a huge improvement if these had the Vibram lug type sole for supreme tracktion in most terrain.

Admin 18 Mar 2019

Hi Matt,

We appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback on the Missoula. We are happy to hear that you like the comfort and easy break-in time of these boots. We apologize that you have had some issues with the soles. Those are Vibram and made especially for this boot. Many of our customers say the grip and slip resistance of these boots is great but I am sorry that was not your experience. I will definitely pass along your concerns to upper management for consideration. We hope this won't deter you from considering HAIX again in the future. Stay safe out there!

Very comfortable, very durable, but very little grip

I've had my Missoulas over 2 years now and have thoroughly put them through their paces whether it be in IA or long days on a P-burn. First let me say, these were an incredible step up in comfort from logger boots. Cant say enough good things about the comfort. They've also proven to be exceptionally durable. I dont clean them as often as I should, yet you couldn't tell how much abuse they've had. They're tanks in boot form.

Now heres my only complaint and it's a rather important one. These have very poor grip. Out west in more dry rock/dirt terrain, I could see this not being much of an issue, but here in the east(WNC more specifically) with a high leaf litter component and generally wetter conditions under the surface, these provide very little grip to the point to where you'll be sliding alot if the terrain gets the least bit steep. Two other people on my crew have bought these and they love them for the pros I listed above but they also talk about lack of grip. The soles have little pliability and it seems to have only gotten worse as they've been exposed to heat, basically hardening the sole. I'm wondering if the 2.0s have improved this. Overall, a great boot but not sure I would recommend to east coast firefighters in the mountainous areas.

Best boot ever

Wearability is Good Longevity is Poor

Missoula wildland hiking boot by Haix is a great wearable boot right out of the box. The boots I have kept my feet dry and protected for a little over a year and a half. Then began the warranty process the back stitching on the boot came undone leaving a gaping hole between the exterior and interior layer. If this was fixed I would score a 10 of 10 and consider staying with Haix brand boots. Will be ordering new boots soon if I cant get this fixed.

Admin 4 Feb 2019

Hi Noah,

Thank you for taking the time to review the Missoula. We are glad that these boots were good right out of the box and served you well for more than a year. We apologize that you have had some issue with sole separation. Someone from our Customer Service Dept. will be in touch with you about your warranty claim. I certainly hope this won't deter you from considering HAIX again in the future. Stay safe out there!

Great Boots

These are the most comfortable boots I have ever worn for wildland fire fighting. The only reason I did not score at 10 is because longevity and durability are yet unknown factors, though those who gave me the recommendation assure me the boots will stand up. Haix customer service has also been outstanding, between initial delivery to a recent follow up email.

Stiff boot

I’ve worn leather logger style boots for two seasons, and they always give me blisters which is why I ordered Missoulas. The reviews I read for this boot were absolutely glowing, but I don’t think the boots live up to the hype. I am usually a women’s 8.5 and I ordered a size 6. They were still a little large and wide, but my feet didn’t slip as much when I put on two pairs of socks. The ankle is really stiff and difficult to bend, but that just might be because they haven’t been broken in. There’s a chip in the plastic on one of the toes, and I haven’t even worn them yet. The boots are slightly more comfortable than my loggers, but I don’t think they’re $289 more comfortable. Sadly I think I’ll be sending them back.

Admin 16 Jul 2018

Hi Olivia,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the Missoula. We are happy to hear that these boots are more comfortable than your previous logger boots, however, we apologize that you were not satisfied with your purchase. We generally do tell women to go down a a size and a half to two sizes in this boot since it is the men's version, but that is just a suggestion because everyone's feet are different. I believe if you had the correct size this would make the boot much more comfortable and less stiff. It may also still be stiff because it needs more time to break-in. The breaking in period for our boots can be up to two weeks of continuous use due to the full-grain leather used throughout. Again, we are sorry that these did not work out for you. We hope this won't deter you from considering HAIX again in the future.

7 Jul 2018

Awesome boots.

I am on my second year with these boots and they are very comfortable and holding up well. Use them for fire, forestry work and hiking. Lot more easy on the knees and ankles than Whites or Nicks. A long time fan of the handmade logging boots but the Missoulas are much easier on the body. Light and comfortable. Can't wait for the 2.0 version as my only issue would have been for a taller boot!

9 Jun 2018

Great Customer Service!

I haven't had a chance to try them out in the field yet but am looking forward to doing so based on other people's great reviews. This is my first wildfire season, and many other boots I've come across seem so heavy and clunky—wanted something a little more comfortable if possible. I am an avid hiker so these seemed more reasonable, and so glad I found them! Will write another review once I've got them broke in a bit more :)

I specifically wanted to comment on customer service. I wear size 8.5 women's and ordered a 6.5. They arrived and I wasn't quite sure I had the right fit, but after emailing customer service they got right back to me with a tip for fitting and turns out I had the right size after all. They were even willing to accommodate a return request after the 30-day period if I needed a different size (to switch out with the ones I had still in the box, unworn). Great experience overall. Also stoked to be able to sign up for the extended wear program, just in case :)

28 May 2018

Best wild land boot.

I just bought my second pair because the first ones were so good. I like how they are really easy to break in. I also like how you just have to pull on the upper half of the laces to tie the boots, makes it a lot more convincing. I am definitely recommending these boots to other people.

Fire

Good boot. Comfortable. Put on many miles for work n fire. Only problem , tongue kept sliding to side and stitches started comin apart. Still wearing them.

Admin 17 May 2018

Hi Jason,

Thank you for taking the time to review the Missoula. We are happy to hear that the boot is comfortable and has been serving you well on the job. We apologize that you have had issues with the tongue and the seams coming apart. If you bought them new (not FS) and they are less than a year old, this would be covered under warranty. We also have a new version of this boot, the Missoula 2.0, that has some updates including less sliding of the tongue. You may want to consider this boot for your next purchase. Again, we appreciate your feedback.

17 Mar 2018

These are fantastic boots!

These are my first pair of Wildland Fire boots. They are so light and fit so well, especially with thick hiking socks. The reviews I read suggested I get a half size smaller for women but I'm glad I stuck with my 8.5 instead of 8. Plenty of wiggle room in the toes and my heel doesn't slip at all. The stiffness is going to take a while to break in but other than that I absolutely love these boots! Keep making this great product

14 Mar 2018

Missoula, a step above.

Purchased my first pair of Missoula's in '15 after working my way through other makes such as; Wesco, Whites, Danners and Haix, all of which are fine boots well made and very reputable in their field of expertise. I found each boot little more comfortable than the previous. The comfort I am referring to was the fit and feel especially in my knees and back. As for foot bed comfort, with each boot accommodations can be made to enhance the feel depending on the wearers preference. However the Missoula has been the most comfortable out of the box and down the trail that I have experienced in my career. I am eagerly awaiting the NFPA approved version that has been referred to in previous reviews. Thanks HAIX, a great boot, keep up the great work!

3 Mar 2018

Great boot but...

31 Dec 2017

Great boots for the price

I bought these boots in June of 2015. I have worn them for three fire seasons, not only during my shift/fire assignments but on my days off for hiking as well.

They are very comfortable, I wore whites/nicks for 8 fire seasons before I purchased the MIssoula and my knees/hips no longer hurt like they used to. The heels are lower and they don't wear nearly as bad as my previous boots did.

I did experience issues with the sole coming apart, which began about midway through the 2017 fire season. However, this occurred in the area of the boot where my foot puts excessive pressure on the boot due to an old injury. Some guys I know have had the boots for many years without issue, and I've also heard of others that experienced issues with the soles coming apart so take that for what it's worth.

As others have mentioned, this boot needs to be 1 or 2" taller. It sounds like Haix is working on a new model for 2018 which increases the height of the boot so I'm holding out for those before I purchase a new pair.

Regardless of the sole de-lamination issue, I believe the price and comfort make these boots well worth it.

Admin 2 Jan 2018

Hi John,

Thank you for taking the time to review the Missoula. We are happy to hear that these boots have lasted you through three fire seasons and that they are comfortable on the job. We are also pleased that these boots have helped with knee/hip pain. We apologize that you had some sole separation, but this can happen depending on how much use they got during those three fire seasons. We are currently working on a new model which will be taller and have a different sole to make it NFPA certified so be on the lookout for that! We appreciate your service and your comments and hope you will continue to be a loyal HAIX customer in the future.

8 Nov 2017

2 long and hot seasons

This is an updated review of the boot and Haix. First Haix has great customer service. I received a full shipping refund when my boots were a week late. Thanks
The boots. I don’t think about my feet anymore. For years I suffered from heel ankle knee and Achilles pain from elevated heels on Whites wesco and nicks. No more pain.
The fit around the toe box has gotten sloppy but is no big deal. The leather is still holding up well although needs to be re died. Also a non issue. No delamination! The sole is holding up as well. Probably good for one more season. Not bad for a non welt construction. The only major issue to dissuade me from purchasing this boot agin is height. The upper needs to be taller.... a full two inches. 1 inch more so there is no doubt for policy and a second for safety and comfort.
Thanks

Admin 8 Nov 2017

Hi Dave,

We appreciate you taking the time to update your review of HAIX and the Missoula.  We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and we are happy to hear that you are satisfied with your experience.  We are glad that you no longer have to worry about feet, ankle, heel or knee pain anymore thanks to our boots.  We are also glad that you like the construction of the boot and that the sole is holding up well.  As far as the height issue, we will be coming out with a new version of this boot next year which will be a full inch taller and will meet NFPA certifications so keep that in mind when going to purchase your new boots.  We appreciate your business and hope these boots continue to serve you well in the future.

Crew Captain

Great wildland boot. I have been wearing them for two year very comfortable. I wear two pair of sock one thick and one regular sock no problems. I agree they need to be 1" taller
You guys have a forestry boot called HAIX Protector Prime Series but it's steel toe is there a way to get those without the steel toe and the runner tip? Turn those into a woodland boot anyway great boot.

Admin 17 Oct 2017

Hi Brian,

Thank you for taking the time to review the Missoula.  We are happy to hear that these boots have served you well for two years and that you still find them to be comfortable on the job.  We appreciate your comments and are always striving to improve our products, so I will definitely pass your suggestions along to upper management for consideration.  We hope you will continue to be a loyal HAIX customer in the future!

18 months of wear

I wrote a glowing review back in September of 2016, now after I have had the Haix Missoulas for 18 months, I have discovered it's one weakness. The fabric on the back of the boot on the inside, where your heel slides into the boot, has separated and catches my heel every time I put them on. It is annoying. But once I get past that little hurdle, these boots are still awesome. I wear them to the woods every day and have never had an issue with lamination, I spray saddle soap on them once a month to keep them soft and looking great, and I still wear them most of the day because they really are comfortable. If it just weren't for that loose fabric on the back of the heel, I'd be 100% thrilled, but hey...everything wears out eventually right? Thanks Haix for a great boot!

Admin 13 Oct 2017

Scott,

We appreciate you taking the time to let us know how your Missoula boots are holding up over time.  We are happy that these boots are still comfortable, even with everyday use, and that they still look great!  We apologize that the fabric on the back of the boot has separated and catches on your heel.  You could always reach out to NuShoe to see if they are able to repair it.  I am not sure if that is a service they offer or not.  But overall, we are glad that you love the boots and that they have served you well.  We hope you will continue to be a loyal HAIX customer in the future.

16 Sep 2017

About a half size too big! But otherwise great

Boots feel great and light. Unfortunately about a half size too big... will need to size down

Admin 18 Sep 2017

Hi Rachel,

We appreciate your feedback on the Missoula.  We are happy to hear that you like the comfort and lightness of the boot.  As far as the fit, these boots do run a half size larger than a normal shoe.  Please keep this in mind when ordering in the future or feel free to reach out to our Customer Service Dept. via phone or live chat if you have any sizing questions.  Thank you for service and for wearing HAIX.

15 Aug 2017

Supreme wildland fire boot!

After minor sizing issues I finally received the size that works for me. I normally wear a size 8-8.5 in womans shoes. After discussion with a fitting specialist over the phone we decided on a size 6. The boot seemed just a tad bit big but knew that a 5.5 would be too small I put in a redwing insert and they are now the perfect fit! The Missoula is most wonderfully comfortable but I will say it has taken a few hours a day to break them in. I love the lacing system, it allows variety in getting the fit just right! I am extremely pleased with this boot and the phenomenal customer service! Thank you Haix!

Admin 15 Aug 2017

Hello Desiree'

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on the Missoula.  We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, and we are happy that one of our specialists was able to help you find the right size.  These boots are made with premium full-grain leather so they can take more time to break in, but we are pleased that you did and now they are comfortable on the job.  So glad that you are happy with this boot. We appreciate your business and your service.  Stay safe out there!

14 Aug 2017

Great but don't toss out your whites

First let me say I have three haix boots: the Missoula, the xr1, and a pair of structure boots. The Missoula and xr1 are 8.5 and the structure boots are 9. Because of this: TRY THE BOOTS ON FIRST. The Missoula fit much larger, large enough I've put in a thick orthotic and still have plenty of room. The structure boots fit more like an 8.5 and the xr1s are a like a narrow 8.5. Try the boots on before you buy.

Anyways back to my review. Great boots for around the station and for IA fires. These boots are like slippers in comparison to my whites. The laces really help for night calls. A huge plus is the usual evening knee ache I usually get from wearing my whites around the station just about went away. My only issue with them is what would be suggestions for the next model: I prefer taller boots; another two inches wouldn't hurt. Additionally the tread is not the greatest. If I were to compare these to tires, they have a more "all terrain" tread in comparison to my whites which would be a mud terrain. Thirdly, sown on sole wouldn't be a bad idea as well. If you get these some usage suggestions: first don't double sock, these run warm and double socking will cook your feet. Two, don't toss your whites/nicks/etc in the closet just yet. I keep mine on the engine for fire assignments and for strike teams. And again, try them on before you buy. All in all 8/10 minus a few personal preferences.

Admin 14 Aug 2017

Hi Dylan,

We appreciate you taking the time to review the Missoula.  As far as your comments about sizing, it is always the best option if you try the boots on first since our boots run differently depending on the model.  But many of our customers don't have that option, so our Customer Service Dept. and Live Chat help with sizing questions.  We are happy to hear that the boots are so comfortable, they are like wearing slippers and that they have helped to alleviate knee aches.  Sorry to hear that you don't like the Vibram sole of the Missoula.  The sole is specially made with a stable non-slip edge to keep your footing on slick terrain.  We apologize that you did not share that experience.  We recommend wearing just one pair of wool blend socks with these boots.  This along with the Climate System will help to keep your feet cool and dry.  Thank you for your suggestions, I will pass these up the chain of command for consideration.  We appreciate you being a loyal HAIX customer.  Stay safe out there!

6 Aug 2017

Can't wait to try another size

I tried one pair in a size at the recommendation of the customer chat, and even though she said they run large, I went with it. But, they were too big. So, with ease, I sent them back with free shipping and am waiting on the next pair to arrive. They felt like they were going to be comfy.

Admin 7 Aug 2017

Hi Tessa,

Thank you for reviewing the Missoula.  We are sorry to hear that the boots were the wrong size but we are pleased that the return process was easy for you.  We hope that once you get the correct size these boots will serve you well on the job.  We appreciate your service!

Boot review

Fit, comfort, light weight all great. Took about a week to fully break in but they were comfortable out of the box enough to wear all day with no blisters. 2 issues, they are just a little wide compared to most other manufacturers. And the tongue centering is not effective at all, the Velcro does not hold it in place, however it also does not effect the comfort for me. Adjust the wideness, and do something else to hold the tongue center and it would be a solid 10.

Admin 30 Jun 2017

Hi Clayton,

Thank you for taking the time to review the Missoula.  We are happy to hear that you like the fit and comfort of this boot.  We apologize that the width was a little big.  These boots don't come in widths at the present time but I will certainly send your concerns about that and the tongue up the chain of command for consideration.   We hope these boots continue to serve you well.

Much preferred to logging boots!

After a year of achey feet wearing "logging boot" style fire boots, I am glad to say that I am foot pain- free! Super sturdy boots. My only complaint is that the boots ran big on me. I am a Women's size 8.5 - 9. I ordered a size 7 M, but the boots are still a little too long and wide.

Admin 9 May 2017

Hi Stacey,

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with the Missoula.  We are happy to hear that your achy feet are now pain free and that the boots have been sturdy on the job.  We are sorry to hear that the boots are too big.  In general we do tell women to go down in those boots because the boots run about a half size larger and to accommodate the men's sizes.  But everyone's feet are different and we cannot guarantee sizing without fitting you ourselves.  We do offer free returns on all our boots for sizing issues within 30 days of purchase as long as they have not been worn.  You may want to keep that in mind in the future in case you run into this problem again.  We hope this doesn't deter you from being a loyal HAIX customer in the future.  Thanks for your service!

Haix Missoula

I recently purchased a pair of Missoula's for use on the fire line. So far they are very comfortable with little break. My only complaint is that both boots squeak when I walk. The first pair I ordered squeaked and after speaking with customer service, they said they shouldn't and gladly accepted my return and I ordered another's pair. The second pair didn't squeak out of the box, but both boots developed a very loud squeak after my first fire. The squeak seems to be coming from the tongue area, perhaps leather rubbing together. Maybe this will go away in time, and I hope soon because it is annoying. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Rob,

We appreciate your feedback on the Missoulas.  We are happy to hear that you found them comfortable with little break-in time.  After speaking with customer service about the squeaking issue, I am confident that you were satisfied with the resolution we found for you.   Thanks for your service and your loyalty to the HAIX brand.

Not to impressed

Well I really like them at first very comfortable then only a half season had passed and boom they started tearing at the sole and smiling. Then I noticed it was only stitched to piece of fabric that was unfit to be sewed to. Sad that somebody would sell a product like that to people who need a very durable product.

Admin 27 Feb 2017

Hi Greyson,

We appreciate you taking the time to review the Missoula.  We are sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your purchase.  We stand behind the quality and durability of our boots.  The Missoulas do come with a one year warranty, so if they broke down on you within that year, that issue would have been covered and could've been repaired or replaced.  Keep this in mind when considering our boots in the future.

LOVE THESE BOOTS!! BUT...

Let me start off by saying, I LOVE THESE BOOTS! I am a wild land firefighter in California and i switched to these boots last year after wearing Whites in previous years. These boots were absolutely amazing on my feet and i had no issues wearing them all day or night on the fire line without having to replace them. I was even able to drop down to one pair of socks while wearing these boots which was fantastic for my feet. I especially love the locking quicklace system that is on these boots, seeing as we do have to jump out of bed in the middle of the night for medical aids as well. Definitely faster than lacing up my whites. I love the insole also, cradles the foot and i can hike all day or walk on cement all day in comfort. MY ONLY COMPLAINT, and its really not that big, but I seriously wish that Haix would consider making these boots 8" from the sole instead of the ground so that they were taller. I have had a few close calls with my Nomex almost exposing the top of the boot. On top of that, the rumor is that CALFire could potentially try to ban these boots because of the height. HAIX - PLEASE MAKE THEM A LITTLE TALLER SO THAT I CAN WEAR THESE FOREVER :). Like i said, I LOVE THESE BOOTS!

Admin 1 Feb 2017

We appreciate you sharing your experience with the Missoula's.  We are happy to hear that you have found them to be comfortable, breathable and efficient while out on the job.  I will pass your concern about the height up the chain of command and hopefully we will release a taller version of this boot in the future.  Thanks for your service, stay safe!

I am truly amazed

I have been a Wildland Firefighter since 2003. Been thru the leathers, always looking for the next best boot. Have been thru the leather break in, and working on a break in now (third year on present leather boot). Have been in La sportive which was my go to boot. But now there is Haix Missoula. I purchased these boots 3 months ago and now can say they are the best wildfire boot I have owned. Size for me ran true, I use an obeo insert and Darn Tough sock. So comfortable that I wear them all the time for all occasions, not just fire. Try them!

Admin 27 Oct 2016

Hi James,

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us feedback on the Missoula boots.  We are happy to hear that you have had such a positive experience with them over the past three months and hope they will continue to serve you well in the future.

Thanks again!

Most amazing footwear I've ever purchased

Many of my co-workers recommended these boots to me after my traditional logger style fire boots tore up my feet while working. After reading the reviews and doing my homework, I decided to go ahead and purchase a pair. I can tell you that I'm very glad I did. As others have stated they are wonderful right out of the box. There is no break-in time needed and they are a good sturdy boot. They are so comfortable I don't feel like I'm wearing a work boot at all. I wear them in my office even when I'm not on the fire line. The traditional fire boots slowed down my hiking, were painful to move and stand in and left me feeling exhausted by the end of the day. The HAIX allow me to move faster, negotiate the terrain better and I can work for longer periods pain free and not feel exhausted. Another positive aspect is not having swollen ankles at the end of the day as well. I will try and see if I can sell my traditional logger style boots to one of my co-workers and I will definitely be a HAIX customer from now on. I recommend these boots to anyone who has to work on their feet all day. It's a nice looking and comfortable boot for both work and play. Thank you HAIX for existing.

Admin 17 Oct 2016

Hi Steff,

We appreciate your feedback on the Missoula's.  We are happy to hear that you made the switch to HAIX and that the boots have served you well both out in the field and in the office.  Thank you for your support and recommendation.

Light and comfy

It took a couple weeks for the boots to break in. The boots would pinch the tops of my feet like ski boots but after the break-in period they are some of the best boots I have owned! So light weight and durable. I think my quest to find the perfect boot has come to an end!

Admin 11 Oct 2016

Hi Dan,

We appreciate your feedback.  The Missoula can take a little longer to break in than some of our other boots due to the thick, full grain leather used throughout.  While this does extend the break in period a bit, it will help ensure a much longer life.  We are glad you waited it out and are now happy with you purchase.  We hope they will continue to serve you well in the future.

Thanks!

Boots seem very comfortable but squeek. I assume that is something that will eventually go away. However, their largest boot is too small. Need a 14 which you do not make, yet.

Gave a lower score because you would think in this day and age with so many of us over 6 feet, a size 12 or 13 would be standard. Let me know when you make a size 14.

Admin 4 Oct 2016

Hi Craig,

Sorry to hear that your boots are squeaking.  This is actually a manufacturer's defect and would be covered under warranty.  Since we do not carry the Missoula in your size, we can recommend getting the XR1 instead which goes up to size 16 and is certified for wildland firefighting.  Please contact our customer service dept. at 859-281-0111 and they will be happy to assist you.

And thank you for your feedback.  It is greatly appreciated.

Happy

As for the longevity of the boot I cannot say, but this has been the best fire boot I have used. First day in them I worked a dessert fire that my crew had to hike about 7-8 miles. There was a little discomfort from never having worn the boots, but my feet felt better than my whites or ad-tecs after two seasons worth of break in for both. I only put in about 4 weeks worth of fire and fuels work, but I am very pleased with these boots. After work I can keep the boots on and do things around the house whereas my other boots had to come off immediately after arriving home. I would recommend the product to anyone thinking about a fire certified hiking boot. Very happy with my purchase.

Wildland Firefighter

The boots are amazing thanks I was impressed with how great they are. Over all will be referring and ordering these boots when it's time for some new ones!! My only down fall is that I ordered these boots before 10am and my order wasn't processed till 4 days later and it wasn't till the 4th day at the end of the day that I finally heard back from y'all, other then that I was pleased with the boots can't wait to put them to work.

Admin 12 Sep 2016

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for your feedback.  We are happy to hear that you are enjoying the Missoula's.

Sorry it took a few extra days to receive the boots.  As indicated on our website, orders placed after 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time are processed the next business day.  Unfortunately, you just missed the cutoff.  We are also not set up to process on the weekends or holidays which is why it  may have taken more time for you to get them.  But I see that they did ship out the next business day, Tuesday, Sept. 6th.

Again, we appreciate your review and hope that you will continue to be a customer in the future.

Thanks!

Comfortable, but don't last as long as they should

I was recommended these boots by a friend because I was looking for boots other than the traditional logger style boots. They fit a little large but with a high arch insole they fit perfect, virtually no break-in time. Had them for two fire seasons & recommended to everyone I knew. Half way through the second season the sole on the right foot started to separate at the toe. Two of my co-workers had the same issue. I contacted Haix and was told the could not be fixed. They said I could buy a new pair with the promotion they were running at the time. In my opinion the boots were comfortable but should last longer than a season & a half, and I'm not on a hand crew where I'm hiking every other day. I'm going to go with another brand that should last longer. I can no longer recommend these boots to friends & co-workers, instead will have to tell them my story and let them make there own decision.

Admin 30 Sep 2016

Hi Mr. Ruano,

I apologize for the issues you had with Missoulas.  Since the boots were no longer under warranty, I was told that customer service emailed you a couple weeks back and offered you the lowest price we can on a new pair of boots.  So far, we have not gotten a response from you.  Please contact us again if you are still interested or would like to discuss this situation further.

Once again, thanks again for your feedback.

Painful

The least comfortable boots i've had in 25 years in the fire service. They are so inflexible they are bruising my feet. Can't even wear them to walk in for a day, definitely won't be able to work in them. Very painful across the top of my foot.

Admin 12 Sep 2016

Steve,

Thanks for your feedback.

We are very sorry to hear that you are not happy with your Missoula.  This boot can take a little longer to break in, due to the thick, full grain leather used throughout.  While this does extend the break in period a bit, it will help ensure a much longer life.

Please call customer service (866-344-4249) if you continue to feel discomfort, as they would be happy to troubleshoot the issue with you.

Best boot for the price and it is very comfortable. Wear them for work

So far so good!

Hey guys! I bought these boots based on recommendations from my co-workers. I'm a wildland fire fighter and was ready for a boot change. I typically wear a European 42, or women's 11. I ordered a size 9.5. And, honestly, the boot was a little wide all around. So I bought some inserts and instantly no problem! No break in time required. Super light which makes hikes easier.

22 Aug 2016

Love these boots. I ordered 2 sizes, 5.5 and 6. I ended up keeping the size 6 and adding an insert. The company was great working with returning and credit. The boots are comfy, look nice and I wore them on a 7 mile hike just after purchasing and only wea

Great boot!

29 years of firefighting, SMJ/HS/FMO

Very comfortable boot. Excellent support on off camber hillsides. I don't like the Velcro tabs on the tongue. I also would like a lighter color, black really heats up the feet in direct sunlight.

Paid for next day shipping and it took a week. Waste of $68

About to order 2nd pair.

Excellent pair of boots! I've gotten three seasons out of my haix, thinking I have two more. Purchasing another pair just to have them:)

18 Jul 2016

I will continue to wear these boots. Very pleased.

14 Jul 2016

As advertised.

Great boots! Shipped fast, sizeing is very close, customer service was great. I did have to return the firat pair as they were too small. The included return shipping label was not usable but after a quick call to the friendly ladies at customer service they emailed me a new one, no problem. These boots are definitely the most comfortable boots I have worn fighting fire. The being in south Florida we get our feet wet quite a bit, and these boots fit the bill nicely. No water has gone through the boot and ruined the day. I was pleasantly surprised! If these boots ever wear out, I will immediately buy another pair!

Great boot

Like everyone else that has posted I have tried every brand of wildland boot out there. These were definitely a surprise. I started wearing them right out of the box and my old boots are still sitting where I left them the day these came in. The most comfortable boot that I have owned. It is nice to spend a hard day on the fireline and your feet are not blistered or sore when you get home. The price is much easier to swallow than the other brands too. I have found my favorite boot and expect too purchase another pair.

Surprising Awesome

Ok, I have been a White's Boots Guy for 15 years and White's does make a great boot, but recently (maybe because I'm getting old) I decided I wanted something easier to lace up, lighter weight, and less rigid that my 12 inch smokejumpers to have as a spare pair of workboots. So I went with the Haix Missoula. Lets just say all the peeps on here who say "they are great right out of the box" they aren't kidding. I have wore the Haix now for 5 months through all of prescribed burn season and into summer while I cruise and mark timber in them everyday. These really are the most comfortable boot I have ever had. Zero break in time, no boot bite, just a solid, lightweight boot that I end up wearing all day long. I used to take my White's off at the end of the work day and leave them under my desk because I hated wearing them any longer than necessary. Now I put the Haix boots on at the house, wear them all day, all evening, and I am usually taking them off at bed time. They are just that comfortable. I bought them to have as a spare pair of boots and my poor old White's haven't seen any action since the UPS man dropped the Haix Missoulas off at my porch. I parked the White's in my closet and haven't looked back. I seriously don't think you will have any regrets with these boots.....I don't.

Admin 28 Jun 2016

Greetings Scott.  Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts about the Missoula. We think they're a pretty awesome boot as well! We're so glad to hear they're working out so well for you.

Not Resoleable

These boots are comfortable and perform well in the wildland fire arena. However, I am disappointed to recently find out that the soles CANNOT be resoled as originally advertised. This was a big selling feature for me.

23 Apr 2016

Good boot, would be great with a few changes

Almost my favorite boots out of Whites, La Sportiva, and Scarpa. I have put these boots through the ringer for a year from Alaska to Florida. These boots are comfy right out of the box, no time to break in. If you like a stiff boot, this may not be for you. They held up to some fairly wet conditions, and dry desert conditions as well with no signs of sole delamination. These boots are wider than most, which caused some issues for me personally. I typically wear a medium width 11.5, I added a SOLE high volume foot bed on top of the HAIX insole to take up some space, but still had a bit more room than I like in the ankle. The upper lace eyelets are closed, which adds a bit of difficulty when putting the boots on and lacing.Unfortunately, I am going to go with a narrower boot for this season

24 Feb 2016

Fantastic--my "new" favorite boot.

I've been a firefighter for nearly 20 years, and have been through a slew of wildland boot types, including Hawthornes, Whites, Redwings, Haix's heavier wildland boot, and various station-style boots. Boot-finding is an expensive enterprise because a showroom floor cannot give you anything about how a boot will work when humping steep hills, or standing around ash pits. Wildland boots have a lacing system that is also difficult due to the looping system, and in my department where we are all-purpose, trying to switch boots is a pain in the ass. I was surprised to see one of our inmate crew captains wearing the Missoulas. I asked how they lasted and felt, and he loved them. I bought a pair right away--garnering a lot of odd looks due to yellow coloring--and away I went on numerous fire assignments. The boots were fantastic for the following points: 1) The heels aren't ridiculously high like those of other wildland boots. A kinesiology master's graduate like myself can appreciate the toll those high heels take on the knees, hips and low back of countless old timers. 2) The boots are light. 3) As advertised, the inside doesn't fold or tear. 4) The lacing is very easy and fast. 5) Mine have held up on numerous assignments, countless days of mopping up and active firefighting, and many miles of hiking--often on lava fields like those found on the Eiler Fire (2014). The only con I had was the boots were a little short for my big wide feet (I do a lot of barefoot training so my feet are wide) and this was noticeable during downhill hiking when my toes would get hammered. The solution was to order my next Haix one size larger, and voila, problem solved. Bottom line, for the foreseeable future, these Haix Missoulas will be the boots I wear until I retire.

great company

I received my boots at the beginning of the 15 fire season and worked my home region in north east Washington. The first week the right boot delaminated. After identifying the problem to HIAX my boots were promptly replaced with no charge to me at all. No questions, Great warrantee and I am very happy with the boots. Ready to lead my crew again.

Love them so far!!!

So i thought i'd give these a try a lot of other guys in my unit are wearing them and all like them. so far so good but i do wish they made them in a 10" option as well. also the can be a little tight around the ball of the foot if you tighten the laces up good. a suggestion would be to add a ratchet type of tension device that could be be attached to the eyelet and locked down when needed or a boa type of system would work as well. other then that they are great. i recommend them to everyone that asks about them. great boot so far!!!!

15 Aug 2015

Light weight and sturdy

I am a women's size 7.5 normally and I ordered the 5.5 and they fit perfect. I have been wearing them on long hikes daily trying to break them in and I have yet to experience any blisters. They were very stiff to begin but after a walk through a creek, they are starting to feel great and my feet never got wet. I love how light they are and the grip is outstanding- able to walk straight up rocky faces. I will be using them on fires and prescribed burns in the next month and am very happy with my purchase. Thanks for the new style of wild land hiking boots!

30 Jul 2015

Comfortable and durable

I purchased my Missoula Hiking boots in late 2013. I work on the Angelina/Sabine NF where we do a lot of prescribed burning and respond to wildfires on the districts and surrounding areas. I primarily operate one of our Type 5 Engines so I am constantly stepping up and out of the engine and working cat faces with the hose. I have never had any issues with wet feet like I had with traditional leather fire boots. It feels comfortable and light. I would definitely recommend this boot. If these boots wear out (which doesn't seem likely in the next 2 years) I will definitely purchase them again.

10 Jul 2015

Boot feedback from a female firefighter

Once I got my women's sizing of the boot in check with just a quick phone call to the customer service line (they run around a half size bigger). They shipped them super fast to me, which I was super pleased with.
1. As a forester, I work outside in steep terrain every. single. day. These boots have been sturdy and comfortable with no hotspots to be seen or felt.
2. When I don't have to bandage up my little girl feet... I am one happy person. Its so nice to throw on these boots and roll on!
3. When I'm on a western fire, my feet are everything. If they're not in check.. I'm not in check. These have kept me comfortable and helped with feet fatigue. Trust me, I've tried every brand of boot there is.
If HAIX keeps making boots like this.. i'll keep on keeping on buying them.

Much love to this company!

Wildland Fire

I ordered a pair of these boots March 2014 and have wore them daily and on all my fire assignments (CA, AZ, NM) and absolutely love them. They are the only boots that I did not have to break in, no blisters!
Great customer service- talked to a rep when ordering and nailed it with the recommended size. These boots are very light but durable. Noticed on all my assignments, everywhere I went someone had a pair of these and they had great things to say (even the shots)! Had them for a year and are continuing to wear them. They are in good shape after a busy fire season. I will be ordering another pair when that time comes.

Hotshot Tested

I have worn the Haix Missoula's since May 2014 on every fire and terrain I have been on. I have been hesitant for years on wearing the hiking style boots on fires. The Missoula boots are extremely comfortable and durable. I, on two occasions have walked in extremely hot burns. The boots did get very hot like any other traditional boot will but there was no delamination to the boot. For those trying for the first time, there is a week break-in period like most boots. No issues with bites but will feel like you are wearing an ankle brace for that week. Since my purchase of the Haix Missoula's, half my crew has already purchased a pair and have made comments like "It's like wearing sneakers". The boots are easy to maintain as well, just saddle soap to wash and let dry, no need to oil. I would highly recommend these.

Wildland Firefighter U.S. Forest Service

I got these boots after seeing them at a fire show that I went to. I got a pair of them and have had them now for a year know. I were them every day to work and they have held up great the only thing that has happened the laces just broke but easy to fix. I will buy another pair when these go bad.

20 Aug 2014

Very Comfortable

Very comfortable a nice break from traditional wild land boots. I am hoping they hold up to the remaining fire season as I am not looking forward to wearing my old boots ever again.

8 Aug 2014

Not as advertised

These boots are comfortable, but they are NOT water resistant or even "hydrophobic". Nearly ruined my mission when I discovered that my brand new Missoulas are basically a sponge. Wet feet for ten days.

Admin 11 Aug 2014

Hello Steve,
I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your Haix Missoula purchase. While the leather on this boot is water resistant (splashed water will bead on the surface of the leather), it is not waterproof (prolonged contact with water will soak through the boot).  If you would like to discuss this further, please call Haix North America Customer Service at 866-344-HAIX (4249)

Wildland Firefighter

Just received my Missoula's and can't say on life expectancy yet but as far as comfort they are great and look to be very well built. I wear an 11 1/2 with insoles I always put in every boot (Spenco) and they fit great. I will try to put an update on here after 2014 fire season.

26 Sep 2013

I will continue to provide feedback to you as I continue to wear the Missoula. It is truly a great product

I received the boots (Missoula) last Thursday. I tried them on and they fit well. I decided to give them a good test run yesterday. I went on a hike in an area that burned in northern NM in 2011. I walked a total of about 8-1/2 miles and I must say that I was amazed at how well the boots performed. First of all, they were extremely comfortable. I was walking on surfaces ranging from wet streams to rock outcropings to general forested areas. The boots performed extremely well and I will definitely be recommending them to friends and coworkers. The typical wildland boot (White’s) take quite some time to break in and what I found surprising about the Missoula was how well it fit my foot and never once did I feel uncomfortable, regardless of the terrain.

I will continue to provide feedback to you as I continue to wear the Missoula. It is truly a great product!!!!!
